Criteria
Investigation officers in policing are typically expected to meet a range of criteria that encompass qualifications, skills, experience, and personal attributes. Here are the broad criteria often required for an investigative officer role.
- Law Enforcement Certification: Typically, a candidate must have completed the necessary policing certifications (such as PIP level 2 accreditation in the UK for serious and complex investigations).
- Previous Experience: Experience in investigative roles, such as working as a detective constable, police officer, or similar role in law enforcement.
- Knowledge of Relevant Legislation: Understanding of criminal law, the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act (CPIA), Human Rights Act, and other relevant legislation and guidance.
- Experience in Case Management: Handling case files, evidence gathering, preparing case summaries, and working with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) or equivalent agencies.
- Investigative Skills: Ability to gather, analyse, and evaluate information and evidence effectively.
- Interviewing Skills: Proficiency in interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects using appropriate methods like PEACE (Planning, Engage, Account, Closure, Evaluate) interviewing.
- Decision-Making and Critical Thinking: Capacity to make sound decisions based on evidence, risk assessments, and situational awareness.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills for preparing reports, presenting evidence, and communicating with stakeholders, including other officers, victims, and partner agencies.
- Digital Investigation Skills: Knowledge of digital forensics, cybercrime investigations, or experience in handling electronic evidence.
- Financial Crime Investigation: Expertise in investigating fraud, money laundering, and other economic crimes.
- Major and Serious Complexed Crime: Experience investigating major crimes—such as homicides, serious assaults, organised crime, and other complex cases
- Covert Operations: For certain roles, experience in undercover operations, surveillance, or handling informants may be required.
